FAQ AND  INFORMATIONS
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A SESSION?

Every osteopathic consultation includes the establishment of a health record based on the medical history of the patient, a physical examination and the treatment. During the initial consultation, the osteopath will conduct a health survey, paying close attention to complaints, health issues or medical interventions that you may have received in the past. A review of your most recent blood tests, X-rays and other medical tests blood and other medical tests will be useful, even though they might not appear to be directly linked to the problem.

Establishment of a health record

  • Reason for consulting (symptoms and how they occurred)

  • Medical, surgical and traumatic history

  • Links between the body’s different systems

Osteopathic physical examination

  • Postural tests

  • Functional and palpation tests (muscular, articular, spine, visceral and craniosacral)

Osteopathic treatment

  • Normalization of mobility and function by choosing the osteopathic therapy techniques appropriate for every patient’s issue, age and health status.

  • Explanation of the identified reasons for specific dysfunctions, goals and effects of the treatment to the patient. Tips and possible exercise recommendations in order to reinforce the benefits of the treatment.

POST-CONSULTATION
HOW TO DRESS?

Based on the problem and the patient’s preference, the physical examination can be performed while fully dressed or in underwear. In order to facilitate the examination and the treatment, it is suggested to bring loose and comfortable clothes (shorts, leggings or loose pants, camisole).

HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?

The number of sessions required in order to see a significant improvement will vary depending on whether it is an acute problem (often 1 or 2 sessions) or a chronic problem (approximately 3 to 5 sessions).

If more than one session is deemed necessary, the time period allocated in-between consultations is about 8 to 10 days for acute cases, and 3 weeks or more for chronic cases. It is preferable to leave sufficient time in-between sessions in order to allow the patient to properly reach his own homeostasis after treatment.

If necessary, the osteopath can refer you to another health professional.

Following a session, you may experience drowsiness or tiredness. Pain sensation may continue or change after treatment, and decrease significantly during the next 24-72 hours. While the body moves towards a new balanced state and processes the treatment, some people may experience various symptoms (stiffness, muscle soreness, unbalanced digestive system, headaches).

It is preferable to limit any important physical effort within one or two days after the consultation (avoid demanding physical or sport-like activities, intense household chores, gardening, moving furniture[CL1] , etc.). It is also important to keep hydrated after treatment.

While osteopathy has a curative purpose, it can also be a preventive therapy. It is not necessary to feel pain to consult.
